Unless we live in a secluded home away from civilization and any kind of technological connectivity, electromagnetic radiation (also called EM fields) will always surround us. Our phones, laptops, wifi routers, smartwatches, Fitbit, smart household products, plugs, sleep trackers are often our daily companions in increasing frequency and intensity.
According to experts, kids aged 8 to 18 are averaging at seven hours a day looking at screens, instead of the recommended 2 hours. Over three times as much exposure time to EMFs often goes hand in hand with other health implications linked with a sedentary lifestyle, such as obesity or back and neck issues.
Our question for today’s article is about exposure to EMFs. What are the key issues with too much electromagnetic radiation both in adults and especially children and what are the things you can do to reduce it?
The first (and very obvious) problem is being literally’ attached’ to the devices we carry. When having a phone on your body and working with a laptop on your lap, your body absorbs the emitted radiation that is most of the time way beyond the set safety limits. Simply put, it is not the best idea. We talk about this and the reasons why in the article titled ’What is SAR?’
Secondly, our children are much more at risk of absorbing the radiation into their bodies. If it’s because of their relatively small size, thinner skulls and their developing brains being more absorbent. In fact, researchers found that children’s bone marrow is 10 times more absorbent than in adults. Beyond the thermal effects (heating of the tissues) and the ability of the body to absorb radiation, another concern we face is the increased risk of oxidative stress and inflammation. Oxidative stress is a state of imbalance in the body that today’s medicine recognizes very strongly. It is a type of physiological stress that the body needs to overcome by using its own antioxidant supplies. It triggers inflammation. When the oxidative stress is present for long periods of time, it is recognized as the cause of many lifestyle-related and chronic diseases, linked to premature cellular aging and DNA damage.
In his article titled ‘Wi-Fi is an important threat to human health’, Prof Martin Pall gives an overview of studies published to date showing evidence that wifi causes ‘oxidative stress, sperm/testicular damage, neuropsychiatric effects including EEG changes, apoptosis, cellular DNA damage, endocrine changes, and calcium overload.’ He adds that ‘each of these effects are also caused by exposure to other microwave frequency EMFs, with each such effect being documented in from 10 to 16 reviews’.
How to effectively reduce EMF exposure?
Taking all of the above into consideration, we now understand that unnecessary exposure to EMFs might not be the most optimal way forward.
So what can we do to help ourselves and our kids to stay more resilient?
We offer you some simple tips on how to ease off the EMF load on the body:
1. Don’t hold your phone close to your head when calling and speaking. All phones emit more radiation when in active mode. Opt-in for hands-free or air tube headphones.
2. Avoid using wireless headphones. Although the radiation absorption rate might be lower compared to a phone, it is the chronic cumulative exposure for many hours that might affect the brain.
3. When choosing a phone, pick one with a lower SAR rating. (That doesn’t mean that you should be using it twice as much though.) Less absorption rate means less burden on the body.
4. Where possible, carry your phone away from the body. Radiation intensity lessens with more distance. This especially applies to kids.
5. Avoid placing laptops and tablets on your lap when working on browsing the internet. Same as with point 3 – your children are more prone to absorb the emitted radiation.
6. Text if it’s not necessary to talk. The power needed for sending a text is much smaller than when calling.
7. Switch off Bluetooth when it is not needed. Bluetooth is another source of EMF.
8. Consider your location and signal strength. Your phone will emit more radiation when the signal is weak. If you have hardly any signal at home, opt-in for landline instead.
9. Keep your bedroom free of phones and electronics. The less electronic devices are around, the less EMF exposure.
10. Switch your wifi during the night. As another source of EMFs, the wifi doesn’t need to be constantly on.
11. If you own a microwave oven, consider getting rid of it. I have personally done this years ago and have never looked back.
12. Switch off electronic appliances around the house when you don’t use them.
13. Reduce screen time. This applies to both you and your kids. Walk the talk if you want them to listen. Do something fun together or read a book instead.
14. Consider high-quality EMF protection. There are a lot of products on the market that simply don’t work, so your best bet is a product backed up by good quality research.
